The Hongik TKD Principles

홍익태권도 원칙집

Hongik Ingan (홍익인간) — “Benefit all humankind” — is the ancient Korean ideal at the root of Hongik Taekwondo. Everything we teach, and the way we treat one another, grows from it.

Our Core Principles — 핵심 원칙

The spirit we train by — on the mat and in everyday life.

Respect & Courtesy 예의

We bow not out of habit, but to remind ourselves that every person deserves dignity.

In practice: Greet instructors, students, and parents warmly — and listen fully before responding.

Safety First 안전

Nothing we teach matters more than the well-being of our students.

In practice: When in doubt, stop and check — a safe class always comes before a finished lesson plan.

Patience & Perseverance 인내와 극기

Growth is slow, and we honor the pace of every student.

In practice: Encourage effort over talent, and never measure one student’s progress against another’s.

Integrity 염치 · 정직

We do what is right even when no one is watching, and we are honest about what we know.

In practice: If we don’t know an answer, we say so — and then we find out.

Self-Control 자기 조절

Real strength begins with mastering ourselves before anything else.

In practice: Stay calm under pressure — our tone sets the temperature of the whole dojang.

Community & Service 함께와 봉사

The dojang is a community, and we grow by lifting the people around us.

In practice: Help before being asked, and leave every shared space better than we found it.

Growth Mindset 성장

We are all still learning — masters included.

In practice: Welcome feedback as a gift, and turn mistakes into lessons, not blame.

“These principles are a living document.”
